Camtasia Studio 4 Tutorial: Use PowerPoint Toolbar

This article will walk through how to turn on the Camtasia Studio PowerPoint Add-In, how to set-up recording settings, how to adjust toolbar settings and how to start and stop recordings from within PowerPoint.

Enabling the Camtasia Studio PowerPoint Add-In

Sometimes the Camtasia Studio Add-In will not appear in PowerPoint after installing Camtasia Studio.  First, make sure you have the PowerPoint Add-in has been turned on in Camtasia Studio. 

  • Camtasia Studio choose Tools > Options
  • Choose the PowerPoint Tab and check the Enable PowerPoint Add-in if it is not currently checked and click OK.

If the Enable PowerPoint Add-in is selected in Camtasia Studio and the Add-in is still not available in PowerPoint, you may need to turn the PowerPoint Add-in on inside of PowerPoint.

To turn the toolbar on inside PowerPoint 2003

  •  Choose View > Toolbars > Camtasia Studio.

To turn the add-in on inside PowerPoint 2007

  • Choose the Office 2007 symbol >  PowerPoint Options.
  • Select Add-Ins.
  • At the bottom of the menu, choose COM Add-Ins, and click Go.
  • Make sure the Camtasia Add-In is checked.

Note:  If the add-in is still unavailable in Office 2003 or 2007 you may need to reinstall Camtasia Studio.

Toolbar features

The available features on the Camtasia Studio toolbar are:

  • Record Presentation

Toolbar Options

To access the Add-In Options, click the Options button in the Toolbar.
The Add-In options are divided into four categories: Program, Video and Audio, Picture-In-Picture and Record Hotkey.

Program


Start recording paused:  PowerPoint presentations will launch to full screen without immediately needing to start the presentation.
Include watermark:  Add a watermark to your recording. 
Record mouse cursor:  Choose to record or not to record your cursor along with your PowerPoint presentation.
Highlight cursor:  Turn the yellow highlight on the cursor on or off during recording.
Edit in Camtasia Studio when finished: Selecting will prompt you to edit your recording in Camtasia Studio. 
At end of presentation: You may choose one option; Prompt to continue recording, Stop Recording, or Continue Recording. 

Video and Audio

Video Frame rate: Allows you to record more or less frames per second.
Record Audio: Turns record audio on or off
Audio source: Choose your available audio source.
Volume: Adjusts the recording input volume.
Advanced: Choose video and audio codec and run the Audio Setup Wizard

Picture-In-Picture

Picture-In-Picture: When a web camera is plugged in, you can turn on or off recording from the web camera.

Record Hotkey


Record/Pause: Allows you to set a hotkey to start and pause a recording in PowerPoint. By default this is set to <CTRL + Shift + F9>.
Stop: Allows you to set a hotkey to stop the recording in PowerPoint.  By default this is set <CTRL + Shift + F10>.
When choosing a hotkey, make sure you avoid choosing commonly used key combinations like <CTRL + B>, which is used to bold text items in PowerPoint.

Recording, Pausing, and Stopping

Recording

When you are ready to record your PowerPoint presentation hit the record button or push <Ctrl + Shift + F9>.  Your PowerPoint presentation will launch. 
Note: Recording is set to launch pausedBefore starting your presentation you will need to click on record or push <Ctrl + Shift + F9> again.

Ending the Presentation

  • Push <Ctrl + Shift + F10> to stop recording your presentation

  • Hit the <Esc> key

  • Reach the end of the presentation

Depending on your settings, you will be asked to continue or stop recording.  If you would like to continue recording a demonstration, click Continue Recording.  If you would like to save your recording and edit or produce it, click Stop Recording.

After you have stopped recording, you need to save your recording.  Remember to save the file in a location that you can find later.   
After you have saved the file you can either edit your new recording in Camtasia Studio or produce the file without editing it first.
