Camtasia Studio 4 Tutorial: Save and Produce Your Projects

Saving and Producing your Camtasia Studio Project file is necessary in order to share your final video with others. This tutorial will talk about the difference between a .camrec and a .camproj file; as well as how to produce your final project into a format that can be shared with others.

.CAMREC and .CAMPROJ Files

The original Camtasia Recorder file that you create during your screen capture is saved as a .camrec (Camtasia Recording) file. Once you bring the .camrec into Camtasia Studio for editing and producing you need to save this project file as a .camproj (Camtasia Studio Project) file. See the table for more comparisons.

File type for: Camtasia Recording File type for: Camtasia Studio Project
The original raw screen recording file Imports .camrec file (and other media) for any editing prior to production
Larger file size because it is the raw recording Smaller file size because it references all content from saved locations on PC
Remains original file and can be used over and over Should be saved often and is the file where all editing takes place

Once you are in Camtasia Studio and have the .camrec file in the Clip Bin and on the Timeline, we recommend saving this project on your hard drive.

  1. Click on the File menu and choose Save Project as…
  2. Choose a location to save your project
  3. Enter a file name (Note: The file type is .camproj which stands for Camtasia Studio Project) and click Save

Compare the Camtasia Studio project file differences

Once you have saved the .camproj file, open the folder where you saved both files and compare the differences between them. Remember that the .camproj file is the one to open when you want to continue editing prior to production.

Under the Produce section of the Task List, click on Produce Video As to launch the Production Wizard.
